News surfaced last week about the possibility of extending Christmas holidays.

However, this may lead to an extended school year (possibly into July).

What are your thoughts about extending the Christmas holidays and the school year?

Do you think it is the BEST decision to stop the spread of COVID-19?

Explain.

Comments

  1. I think extending the Christmas holidays and the school year is a good (but not the greatest) idea because studies show that whilst the weather is cold, covid and other illnesses are easier to spread. Also, if people are spending time with their family during the holiday, they will need to quarantine and the original amount of time on break is not big enough for that. Honestly, I think it is a pretty good idea to do this. But, what would be the best decision is I think that the grade eight’s should be doing the day on, day off schedule because we are old enough to stay home by ourselves (unlike the grade sevens). This would lower the amount of people in our school per day, and it would also, healthwise benefit our school too.

    2. I liked your blog. You made some really good points especially the fact that the original winter break is not enough time to quarantine.

  2. I think that's it a smart idea to extend the Christmas break but I don't think that it means they have to extend school until July. I think that we need out summer break because winter break isn't really a break because we can't go out with anyone and extended family or friends can't come over. But I think that it's the better decision to help prevent covid.

  3. I really like the idea of extending the Christmas holiday. Hopefully we get some time of before Christmas and after and not all at once. By doing so, it will help me see my grandparents and other family members. Since they are pretty old it will give me time to quarantine. Even tho it mean coming to school in the summer I would still like it. I think that going to school in the summer and not as much in the winter would help stop the spread of covid. winter is when the cases go really high. In the summer the cases get really low.

  4. I think that extending the winter break will be good not only for the students but for the virus too.Though I find that extending it into summer would be bad. Because I can’t imagine us when it’s 35 degrees outside with the windows open and a little fan in the front of the class. It’s just going to be harder to communicate with the teacher and understand the subject because of that.

    1. I totally agree that it would be so much harder to concentrate when you are boiling in the heat of the summer, especially when we have to wear masks all the time. Great blog!

  5. I feel that extending the winter break is an amazing idea because people will need time to quarantine after holidays. However, I do not feel that extending the summer school is a good idea because it will be burning outside and covid will be more transmittable. Also, I feel extending school during summer may have a negative impact on some students mental health, especially considering all the work we have been getting recently.

  6. I honestly don't want to extend the winter break. All it makes me think about is how it will be warm and sunny out in July but we will be stuck inside doing exams. Its depressing. But on the upside we can quarantine to see our families but I wouldn't do the plan the school board has I would only extend it by two weeks and not six because I wouldn't mind having an extra two weeks in July instead of six weeks. I don't think changing the weeks will have a much bigger impact on Covid because its either weeks here or there, people will be equally be interacting. I hope we don't get the extra weeks in winter so I can save them to have a nice playful summer.

    1. I agree that doing exams in a building when you can go out and play sucks. Great blog!

  7. I dont think the year should be extended to July. It will feel weird. Christmas break wise I think we should maybe do 4 weeks to let people visit relatives then quarantine for 2 weeks. I do realize why they want to do summer school, but I find that it's not worth it. Sitting in a hot classroom all day when you could be doing summer activities doesnt sound pleasant.

    1. You're right I wouldn't want to be inside a "hot classroom" while there could be so many summer activities outside which are some of the greatest times of the year.

  8. I think that the extension of Christmas break is a good way too slow down the spreading of Covid19 since schools will be closed and schools are were the a lot of students and teachers gather. I think I would definitely enjoy an extended break. However I think that extending the school year into summer time is not necessary. The last 2 weeks of the school year there isn't very much going on so missing them wouldn't be the end of the world. The final exams could be done in the last week and it would be fine in my opinion.

  9. I think extending Christmas break is a good idea, mostly to quarantine twice so you can spend time with your family, and to stay safe to quarantine to keep others safe, so we can try to stop the spread of Covid-19. But mostly extending summer break, that would be tough for us all because it’ll be super hot, and we’d get really distracted by the fact that we’ll be really sweaty, which makes people uncomfortable and hard to concentrate on our work. And most of all, summer is our chance to get to hang out with our friends and do whatever we want all day long which is always really fun to do. but I wouldn't think it would be a good idea to extend it into summer break, because that's our fun time :)

    1. Now that I think about it, It'd be really hard for us to focus in class while it's super hot in the summer, that's such a good point i didn't think about. Good point! ☆

  10. Personally I'm so glad that there planning to extend the christmas break because not only does that mean that my birthday will be during christmas holiday which is great but I love the christmas holiday but that doesn't mean that I like receiving gifts I just enjoy some christmas traditions like buying a tree and decorating it. Although I have such strong opinions about having an extension for christmas break I don't think they should do it because as studies have shown Covid-19 gets higher cases during cold times but lower cases in summer and with this pandemic we're really trying to keep the cases down.

  11. What are your thoughts about extending the Christmas holidays and the school year?
Honestly, I don't mind a lot in general, Christmas is Christmas, it's good that you have more time for the break and honestly I don't like going out in the winter that much and there's a lot to do during Christmas :D I surprisingly agree with the decision they make about extending Christmas break. If you're gonna add more time to school, i also don't care that much, it's not that i like school it's just a price for a price. I think it's a good decision :)

  12. I personally don't really mind the fact that they are planning on extending the Christmas holidays. It will be kind of annoying when school extends into the summer because the weather will be nice, but I think that it would be better if we stay inside when it gets cold, especially since when it gets cold, people get sick more easily. It will mean that for the holidays, we will get more time to spend with our families and to celebrate the holidays.

    1. yes I agree. Its also not very enjoyable to be outside in this freezing weather!

  13. I think it is a good idea to extend the christmas holidays because there is much less contact then in summer because we aren't forced to play with the neighbors or something. I think it's a good idea because whenever people stay home it prevents the spread(duh) so it will be much better so that when we go back to school the chances of getting sick are very low

  14. I think extending the Christmas holidays is a good decision in general.A lot of people have been very overwhelmed and stressed and I feel like this would help people have time to get themselves organized.I think this will also give us an opportunity to actually spend time with family and friends (while following precautions) which is something that is really important to me and many.I also think this decision would help the prevention of covid spreading.

    2. Same, I definitely think it's going to make a difference on students mental health states.

  15. I think it's a very smart idea. It's a tradition for me to go to my grandma's house for supper every year for christmas and thinking about it not happening breaks my heart. So, possibly this is making me happy. I really don't mind extending the school year by a bit if it means I get to see my family on the holidays.

  16. I think that the Christmas break should be extended because it is really the kick that we need to be able to get infections down. If we all do, for example, the 2 week quarantine before Christmas, the 2 week break, then a 2 week quarantine after, we would be able to stop a lot of infections for a little bit and everyone would be able to see their family. I think it is really important for a lot of student's mental health. This pandemic on top of school is really stressful and it would really be nice to be able to have a longer Christmas break to be able to recover and relax.

  17. I think they should definitely extend the winter holidays because it is really important that people see their family and friends to stay happy. I think that they should not add to the school year, though, because no one wants to have school when it is so nice outside and people aren't used to being in class during the summer. I think it could really help stop the spread of covid-19 because people will have two weeks to rid themselves of covid then they can go back to letting us have more than one family in a bubble.

  18. I’m excited to possibly have an extended Christmas holiday but I’m definitely not too excited about extended the school year into our summer. I’d rather just get school over with and have our straight 3 month break. Given the circumstances I do think it’s the best option right now to stop the spread COVID-19 but I also think there could have been better ways before we began sending students back to school in September. Although, the faster everything happens, the faster chances we have of everything hopefully going back to normal.

  19. I don’t think extending the Christmas break will do any good but waste time. I think that the school year should just go on as normal because the more you try to fix things most of the time it just ends up worse. Yes I think that people would want an extended Christmas because it gives you more time at home but do you really want a shorter summer because of it? I don’t want to stay at school any longer than I have to even if I like going to school and learning as much as I can learn. I will be fine with whatever decision the government chooses because there are pros and cons for both choices. As well I think everyone is allowed to have their own opinions on the subject and are able to share those opinions with others.

  20. I think extending the Christmas break will help the reduce of Covid-19. I also disagree because I would really not enjoy having school in July. Everyone needs a break from school because working too hard is not healthy and is very stressful.
