The main character of the book Monster by Walter Dean Myers grows up in Harlem, NY.

Harlem was once considered a very dangerous city to live in.

How do you feel about Montreal? Is it a safe city?

How should government officials deal with dangerous cities? How could they clean them up?

Explain.

  1. I don't think Montreal is a very dangerous place but it defiantly has some bad things in Montreal like the mafia or like gangs but nothing in comparesent to Harlem. I think governments can defiantly improve in their methods in different ways because Harlem is not the best place to live maybe because there isn't enough jobs for people so families can't get fed and forces the people to have to rely on the mafia or gangs to keep them safe and get paid. It's very sad but its the reality and that's why a lot of problems starts, especially in Harlem.

    1. The government should improve their ways. It is also a sad reality that there are so many problems.

    2. You do have a point. In many places in America minimum wage isn't enough to get by in life and lots of people do commit crimes to pay the bills and feed their families.

  2. No city has no danger there is always some type of danger. Montreal isn't the safest but safer that other places. I think that the government should maybe apply stronger laws to dangerous city's. They should make sure families in the city are safe and if the have any concerns or better yet if anything has happened. They could also clean up the city to make it look more proper.

  3. I feel that montreal isn't inherently as dangerous as other places, I mean I'd say it's one of the safer places when you compare it to places in the east, where people are constantly killing each other. Now, I feel that government officials do try and enforce these laws already, but the truth of the matter is, wherever there is society, there is crime. Crime isn't a thing that you can just stop by enforcing more laws, because crimes can happen for multiple reasons, and by fixing one reason, the other reasons begin to prevail. There is no be all end all for crime, maybe stricter rules could possibly help, but it would only be a very temporary fix.

    1. I like your point on crimes that can't be stopped by rules. Great blog!

  4. I don't think that Montreal is 100% safe but at the same time walking in the streets is not always a threat or we are not constantly scared of being robbed. The government could for sure improve their ways of dealing with this because sometimes people have to use things like gangs to provide for their families, like in Harlem. I think by maybe helping out those people who don't have jobs they could help em out.

  5. I’ve never really seen Montreal as a dangerous place, you just have to know where NOT to go but I don’t there isn’t a lot of places in Montreal that aren’t safe. Montreal is definitely low on the list of most dangerous places. There’s going to be danger no matter where you go and there’s not exactly a bunch of things the government can do unless they station police in those places 24/7, which I doubt they’d do. I’d just send out local news emails informing people of possible crimes or dangers where they live like Apple does already with their alerts. I’m all for keeping families and people safe but if someone decide’s to be reckless and ignore the possible danger then that’s on them. Some people rely on certain crimes to provide for their families (i.e joining gangs) not that I necessarily agree with those decisions so I’d just suggest that the government help out more with jobs for people in need this way they don’t turn towards crime to make money.

  6. Montreal obviously has some dangers, but it's not one of the most dangerous places. There are dangers here, but there are also many other places in the world that have more dangers than us. I've always seen it as more of a safe city compared to others, which is why it's not so bad living here. The government can put in place stronger laws and better security systems to prevent crimes and dangers from happening. If the cause of the crimes are people who are less fortunate and don't have much, they can provide these people with jobs and the necessary supplies that they need to live.

  7. I feel like no matter where you go, there will be some level of crime, however, there are definitely some places that are more dangerous than others. I think that there are certain places in Montreal that are safer than others, and there are some places that are more dangerous. But when you look at Montreal, it’s definitely a lot safer than many other places in the world.

  8. I don't think that montreal is dangerous compared to many other places in the world but there are still bad things that happen. I think that the government officials can emply more strict rules and have more securty in places.

  9. Every city in the world (except Iceland where it's a illegal to adopt turtles and dogs that's the only crime) has danger in them. In this world there's evil and shit everywhere. I think that Montreal is okay. It's not bad but it's not good either. It's like in the middle but a little more bad. The officials should deal with it by spreading words to teenagers, kids, adults to inform them that this is happening in their city and they should learn to take immediate action of the right thing to do (i wouldn't know i'm not the government so they can figure it out)

  10. I find that Montreal is safe but we all know that there's some dangers out here. There are some cities that are safer than others, for example downtown is definitely sketchier than other areas. Like we all know of some gangs in our neighborhoods. I'm not sure how the government officials should handle more dangerous cities by putting in more safety measures like more security and more people on the look out and such.

  11. I think Montreal is a pretty safe city since we have much less crime than most other cities. I think it is mostly safe because people just have good morals around here, since we are all just kind of brought up in a nicer environment. Other cities should probabaly enforce the laws more and have more police officers around to ensure no one does anything stupid and to make sure the law is followed at all times.

  12. I think that Montreal is definitely safer than most of the US but in some parts of Montreal its more dangerous. I moved to the West Island a year and a half ago, before that we lived in Villarey in the city of Montreal. During the 8 years we lived in that apartment there there was a fake bomb planted in our yard, there were five men who shot guns into the air in the park and then I saw them run into the alley way next to our apartment, there was a stabbing a block away and a mafia boss was shot through the open window of his sports car near my elementary school. I'm not sure what the government could do. I think Montreal isn't a very dangerous city compared to some other cities.

  13. I don think Montreal is a dangerous city but like any place it has its good areas and bad areas and its crimes. There has been a couple stories that I've heard about in the West Island like some murders, robberies and just stuff like that that happens all over the world. Honestly I don't know what the government should do with dangerous cities. Maybe they should hire more police in those areas. Maybe investing more money into those cities to make it more of a modern place so that way more people start to live and hang out there and that could maybe push the crimes and people who commit them out.

  14. I feel that Montreal is not a safe city but it is safer than most. Some parts are worse than others but i feel overall it's pretty ok. For the unsafe cities I think governments should try to build more homeless shelters and try to help people that could commit a crime because if they get help before then they won't have to steal or whatever.

    1. I also agree with putting in more homeless shelters for the dangerous cities.

  15. I feel like Montreal is a pretty safe city. It of course, has crimes and criminal activity going on, but not like in the states. I think that Montreal is doing a good job of keeping us safe. I think that the government should invest more in police and security to clean the dangerous cities up. That way, there are more people watching and that way there is less crime.

  16. I think Montreal is a relatively safe city, I mean I haven't seen what Montreal is really like yet because of me moving here then Covid came but from what I've seen it's okay. In most dangerous city the main reason is most likely poverty and no education so to fix that then the government of that city should give more money to the population so that they can be middle class citizens atleast and open more Schools in there area because it's cheaper to go to University/College in your home city then from other cities/countries.

  17. Montreal is definitely safer than other cities, but that doesn't mean that it doesn’t have problems. Every once in a while you hear about something bad happening. It’s usually about teens or adults goofing off and doing bad things. But Montreal’s dangerous rate is way lower than Harlem’s. There are many problems in Harlem, but some of them are that there aren't enough jobs for people so families can't get fed and forces the people to have to rely on the mafia or gangs to keep them safe and get paid. The government should have more concerns about these dangerous cities and not treat them like unimportant tiny objects. To clean up these cities they could possibly lower taxes or do something related to that. Also, they could create more employment opportunities.

  18. I think Montreal is a pretty safe city but no place is ever perfect. There are still robberies, harassments, arrests, etc. I have lived in Montreal all my life and luckily nothing bad has ever happened to me and I hope that nothing ever will. For cities that have an elevated amount of shootings, harassments and even robberies should be taken care of. I think that the government officials should have laws or rules put in place for situations like these. If these situations keep happening then the world will be ruined and full of crime. The world should be a happy and enjoyable place for people to live in.

  19. I think Montreal is safe for people who are more well off. Im a person who loves the city, so I tend to go downtown whenever the opportunity is given. When I go down there I see homeless people who are not taken care of at all. The fact that Legault even put a rule in place (Since removed) that homeless people couldn't be outside during COVID-19 proves my point. So while Montreal is a safe place for people like me who have a place to go, it is not for the homeless

  20. I don't think Montreal is very dangerous. It's a fairly safe place for people to live compared to other cities. There is obviously some bad things that happen, but not very many. Cities that have more crimes should put laws in place to make their city a better, safer place for people to live. If they don't do things to try and stop these crimes, their city will become a place where no one wants to live.

  21. Montreal is a pretty safe place to be, I don't feel scared to be out on the streets and I don't think that a lot of huge crimes happen here, but that doesn't mean that crimes don't happen here at all, because we all know they do. I think a way to clean up a dangerous city is by adding more laws and maybe add more police officers around the place so there are eyes and ears everywhere to catch all the crimes and bad people around the city. And adding more laws will hopefully mean that people will follow them.

  22. I think it depends on where you are in Montreal. I think that some parts of Montreal are safer than others. But I believe that every part of Montreal has their goods and some are bigger than others. I think Montreal cant do much about dangerous cities but they can have more police and petrol around but i don't believe there is much u can do.
