OPTIONS, OPTIONS, OPTIONS!

At some point this week, you will get to choose your OPTION courses for next year, GRADE 9!

Will you be making the move to the new St. Thomas High School campus.

What OPTION courses do you feel St. Thomas is missing?

Why do you feel that would be a GREAT option course?

How will it benefit the student?

Explain.

  1. I probably will be moving with St. Thomas to the new building but I really hope there are Spanish classes because my brothers had to learn Spanish before they went on their grade 11 grade trip and it would really be cool to learn about the Spanish culture and It would be cool to communicate with them. Im not really familiar with the options but im guessing Home Ec is an option so that would also be intresting. Learning about home Ec gives us a little more life skills then most classes I find and maybe gets u more prepared for the world. Spanish classes allows us to learn about new cultures and diffrent aspects.

  2. Next year I will be moving to the new St. Thomas High School campus and I’m really looking forward to picking my classes and being able to leave campus for lunch. I feel that St. Thomas needs more language class options, for instance Spanish or German. I would really like to be able to learn these different languages so I can travel to cool places and actually understand what the people are saying. Also, say for example the grad trip, if we were to go somewhere where they speak spanish it would be fascinating to understand and learn their cultures in a language I understand. I think that adding more language classes would be a really great benefit and impact for the students.

  3. I will be moving to the new St Thomas which is now known as Lindsay place. Apparently the school more new and is getting renovated which is nice. I would love to have a course like Spanish were you learn different languages. It would be nice to have other options other that picking one of three different designs. Home economics would be nice since there is mixture of a whole bunch of things to learn like cooking. Spanish class would also be cool because its always interesting learning a new language If students have more of a variety than they would go into the class of there choice which will make them happier to be there.

  4. Next year I will be going to St. Thomas. I would really like a spanish lesson for a alot of reasons and personally I think it was a bad idea to replace spanisg wuth design; if anything I think they should've kept both courses. I think it'll be a great option course because learning a new language actually has a lot of benefits. I think it'll be a great option course because I've always wanted to learn spanish.

  5. I will be moving to the new St. Thomas High School campus next year. I agree with what other students said, I definitely think they should bring back the Spanish course because it’s sure to become useful in the future. I think it would be a great option course because learning a new language can prove to be a useful tool if you travel somewhere were the main language spoken is Spanish, you’ll be able to communicate easily with the locals. It’s also good for a job that requires being able to speak multiple langua

  6. I will be moving to the new St. Thomas school campus next year. I’m very excited since the school will be a lot bigger and we will have more resources such as our very own auditorium. I think that one major option class that is missing from St. Thomas is a language class. Whether the language be spanish, german, italian, etc. I think that learning languages is very important. Learning a new language can help you in life if you ever go to a place where they speak the language that you learnt. As well if you ever meet someone who speaks the language that you learnt you will be able to converse with them and understand what they are saying.

    1. I think that languages are important but I don't think we need that many languages. Maybe French and Chinese, but it's not as important as something like math, where you need to use it for the rest of your life.

  7. Next year I will be moving to the "new" Saint Thomas. I guess for me it will just take a bit longer than usual going to school but it's not the end of the world. I really don't know much about option classes but or the ones I will be taking next year so I guess I will see my options this week. I do think that option classes are a good idea because they let students go in kind of domains that interest them more and that they think will be important in their future.

  8. Next year I will move to Lindsay Place because it seems like a pretty good building. I mean, the Saint-Thomas Building is fine but it is really old. So going to a new renovated building would be a nice change. I don't really mind the Lindsay Place students. They are just more students that will be around. If anything, we might be able to become friends with each other or just ignore each other. Saint-Thomas has lots of good options for classes and they are mostly pretty useful, like coding and health. There are a few things that they could add though. One thing I think I could add would be Urban Farming. It could be a class to learn how to be more efficient with growing food and being able to grow food indoors. We could get are own food indoors without having to transport food. It will be useful for the future because the land is being taken up on Earth.

    1. This is actually really smart! Teaching people how to produce their own vegetables is a great idea, and could solve in some ways, the problem of agricultural land expanding into forests too much, destroying the local wildlife. All in all great blog!

  9. What OPTION courses do you feel St. Thomas is missing?
Why do you feel that would be a GREAT option course?
How will it benefit the student?
In St.Thomas, we have 4-5 option courses in St. Thomas. Music, Art, Drama, Cooking. Last year, I think they added an extra class: Yoga but it was cancelled due to covid-19. I think they should add a physical activity-esque class like yoga or aerobics or you just simply work out the gym with proper equipment. Wouldn't that be so much more exciting than simply running around touching a wall to exceed your stamina? Another class St. Thomas should add is international languages classes for sec 3 - sec 5, i enjoy learning languages and we can do languages like, german or spanish or dutch or any language really :D

  10. I am really excited to move to the new school. I think it will be a fresh start. I think St Thomas and may school are missing a course on just basic life skills like stuff to do with money and savings and just like everything like that yes u do learn some stuff in class but NOT enough. I also think they should bring back spanish i think the more languages you know the better and like i don't know many people who dont wanna learn spanish.

  11. Next year, I think I will move to rennie but I am not sure yet, I might stay. I think that St. Thomas should bring back spanish or another language because I think languages are really important in life. One day I would like to travel the world and it would be fun to learn the lanuage as well. I would really like to enter Drama because I love acting and things like that. I was in the play Annie not to long before COVID and I really enjoyed it. I prefer like non musical plays or films but I still enjoy them either way. I think acting can benefit me as a student because it will imporve my public speaking skills and other reasons.

  12. so true! i would also love to travel around the world, so that's why it is important to bring back spanish as well, good blog :)

  13. I will be moving to the new school next year. Even though it’s a different building, it’s still St.Thomas so there’s no point in leaving because there aren’t really any other schools that I want to go to. I think that the option courses for secondary 3 are okay but there is one major problem. IB basically has no good option courses. Immersion has okay courses the the ones for ib suck. I think that there should be more options for immersion and ib though. However, it’s very hard to please all of the kids so I don’t know what I would add. I know that for me personally, I would love a professional wrestling class because I love WWE, but I don’t know if anybody would even want that.

  14. I am moving to the new school next year. I don't really care about the change, because school is school whether its huge or small, in other words, pain. St Thomas is missing better options for the IB people. I was reading the options I had, and then I read the immersion options, and they're so much better. I want to learn a new language or something, not do "leadership".

    1. Ya its not fair we should be able to do stuff that make us happy not stuff they think is good for us.

  15. I am moving with the school to the new St. Thomas, so I think that a good option for a course would be sculpting because in art class we don't learn how to sculpt and I think it would be really cool. I think it could be good for students because it's a good way to be creative. I think sculpting is good because you can easily just get some clay and tools and you can make really cool stuff.

  16. Next year I'm moving to the new St Thomas building. I feel that St. Thomas isn't really missing any option courses to be honest, but if there was one that I would suggest it would be spanish, as learning another language never hurts and can, in some cases be practical to the student. I feel it's good because it can also fit into the "global" theme of the Ib program when you think about it, so at the end of the day it's a win for the students, teacher, and the IB coordinator people.

    1. A lot of people really want Spanish class but that would be great especially for what you said like for the global theme of the IB program.

  17. Next year I will go to the new St-Thomas building because it is only a 5 minute walk away from my house. I am exited for the move because the school will be much bigger and newer. I think that there should be a Finance class. Where they can teach us about bank accounts, credit cards, how to do your taxes, investments and things like that. I think it would be a very useful class because it is something that everyone should learn. I we have this class we will learn to manage our money well and keep good savings.

  18. Next year I will probably be going to the new building for St.Thomas, what really sucks is, that the people in IB can't take the electives other than a type of design, we can't take cooking or woodworking and those seemed really fun. I think a cool elective would be something like digital art or something like that, where we learn certain programs for like art on like a tablet or something like that, or maybe something like an engineering elective where you get to learn about how motors and engines work.

  19. Next year, I'll be moving to the st Thomas building. I think that IB should also be able to get electives that the immersion students get. I think it would have been really interesting to have been able to do cooking, or woodworking, because that is more hands-on. I think that st Thomas should get a digital art elective. Normal art is fine, but it is very useful and easier to be able to take out a drawing pencil and a tablet then having to get out all the equipment you need to be able to make one drawing. It would benefit the students, as they only need to carry around a tablet and drawing pencil, like I said before, and it would benefit the teachers cause, if this COVID stuff carries over to when we are at the new building. The teachers would only have to carry a tablet and drawing pencil, and not have to worry about someone forgetting their work, as long as they have the tablet.

  20. Next year I will be moving to the new St Thomas building. It's gonna be better because it's closer to where I live. Like a lot of people have said I think spanish should be an option course because it's really good to learn different languages. I would like to learn any new languages because I think learning about a variety of cultures is really great.

  21. I will be coming to the new St.Thomas campus, which I am super excited for. I think that St.Thomas should offer a Spanish course. I think it would be fun to learn another language. And learning another language is always beneficial, and it doesn't even have to be Spanish. It could be Chinese, Japanese, Russian, it never hurt someone to learn another language and you never know what situation you might be in, it might come in handy.

  22. Next year I am going to the new St.Thomas Highschool campus. Something that ifeel should be an option for a course is stock market investment. I think this is a good course in Highschool because stocks are so interesting it includes predicting, math and business having to know when you have to sell your stock or buy a stock some of them are crazy like bitcoin which people still don't have a general idea why it goes so high then so low so quickly. I feel this could benefit the student because for some people this becomes a job in their entire life not to mention that you can get into the stock market at the age "majority in your province or territory" so you can start investing quite young.

  23. I still haven't decided if I will be moving to Lindsay place I think my decision will mainly depend on where my friends are going and how I'm doing in my program.I think a good course that should be added is dance or some sort of extra sports course because we hardly have a lot of gym classes during the week already and for someone like me with a lot of energy I look forward to gym class a lot.

  24. I am excited, but also nervous to go to the new location. I have a strong feeling i'm going to get lost very easily! A course I think Saint Thomas should have is languages. Learning new languages can help us get jobs when we're older because a lot of people are looking for employees who are multilingual. Another reason is because all of my grandparents speak Italian, so it would be nice if I could communicate with them in their language.

  25. I will be going to the new St. Thomas building next year. I really think that our school needs more language classes. It doesn't really matter to me what language, but something other than just French and English. Learning new languages and being able to speak them can be a useful tool in life if you ever travel somewhere or if someone doesn't speak your language. Especially since our school usually goes on trips to other countries (when there isn't a virus), the people there don't always speak English or French, so learning new languages can be helpful.
