Only ONE (1) BLOG this week; no school Friday!

One IMPORTANT discussion that comes out when the weather gets nicer is DRESS CODE.

Should St. Thomas adopt a DRESS CODE POLICY?

What are the advantages/disadvantages of a DRESS CODE?

Are DRESS CODES geared more towards GIRLS?

Explain.

Comments

  1. St. Thomas already has a dress code policy and I don't think that it should get even more strict. It's not fair at all, girls bodies and what they wear aren't responsible for boys thoughts, boys should be less gross and more educated. Obviously, wearing appropriate clothes is important, but shoulders shouldn't be considered "bad". The disadvantages of a dress code is that most of time when you get dress coded it's completely unfair. Dress codes are DEFINITALLY more towards girls. The school system has tought us to cover up instead of teaching boys that they shouldn't sexualize girls and to control their thoughts. It's really sad that you can get into trouble for SHOWING YOUR SHOULDER. Like doesn't that sound stupid?

    1. definetly agree, we should be teaching boys to be more responsible about things and educated

    2. Exactly, sexualising young girls is far worse than me wearing jeans that are ripped to show my knees or something.

    3. Unless someone has some type of knee fetish, I doubt showing a kneecap is such a big distraction. It's a pointless rule.

  2. honestly, i find that the dress code is really stupid because we should't have to be told what we can and can't wear. i think that the dress code should adapt to the summer because let's be real, girls won't have shorts that go down to our ankles, like that's not practical and it looks weird. also, girls shouldn't be told that they have to cover up or that we can't wear a tank top because it's distracting, it' just stupid, so overall, dress codes should be changed in general but just for summer, it definetly should be changed.

    2. I agree, girls shorts are shorter we shouldn't be told to be like wearing pants in the middle of summer, great blog!

  3. I don't prefer the dress code policies that St Thomas has. I find some of the policies only towards girls and like very stupid like not being able to show your knee caps or shoulders like it's a turn on. There are some dress code policies that are reasonable that make sure people don't show up naked but I personally find none of any of these policies ever go for the guys. In my last year's gym class guys would basically come half naked with no shirts but a girl would come with not even a short tank top and she would have to sit our of gym class in the cycle 1 office. I don't like how dress codes are always about women, teaching us to cover up but encouraging guys not all but some to act childish and disgusting behaviour. They are not being taught to control themselves. Dress codes are much more discriminatory towards women. Knee caps, shoulders, shouldn't be covered but some guys should be taught not have an unhealthy mind set.

    1. I agree it's disappointing to hear that story about the girl in gym. We should teach guys to control themselves.

    2. Ya that is kinda sad but it would have been avoided if there was a uniform from the beginning

  4. As a girl at this school, I think the dress code is a bit strict. Ripped jeans I dont really get, unless its ripped in an inappropriate place (ahem, butt). The exposed shoulder thing is dumb. If teachers and boys are looking at them, thats their problem, and its honestly kind of creepy. Being dress coded by a male teacher really makes you uncomfortable, because it makes you wonder why the were even looking there in the first place. It creeps me out. I can't think of one dress code rule that is for boys only. It really sucks.

  5. The dress code that St. Thomas already is terrible. I think if St.Thomas were to adopt another dress code policy there should be an equal amount of rules for each gender. Dress codes easily discriminate more against girls. Girls are obligated to dress a certain way and it's not fair. Girls are not responsible for boys' thoughts or whether they're distracting the others. Of course sometimes the girls can wear something really revealing that actually should be dress coded, but the school system is rigged and instead of telling girls to cover up they should be educating the boys.

  6. I think we should still have dress codes but not to the extreme. The dress code now is more directed to girls. There are so many rules for girls and hardly any for guys. For example girls can't show there shoulder but guys can how is that fair it should be all of nothing. The way teachers follow it isn't fair either. Girls are being dress coded because they show 2 inches of there shoulder and yet guys are practical shirtless and no cares. The worst part is that we have to cover our shoulders because guys can't control ourselves. Now that summer is coming people wear shorts and I feel that girls will get dress coded a lot because of the length of shorts witch I don't find fair.

    1. I completely agree that there should be a dress code, but only for extreme cases, not for 1 mm of shoulder showing.

  7. I think that the dress code isn't fair here. I find it really discriminatory towards girls, and makes them more self conscious about how they look. I obviously don't have any experience as a female, but from the people who I have talked to, it's really strict. I can understand if they dress code someone if, let's say, the ripped part of the jeans is on their butt or something, but if it's on their knees, it's nothing. I have never met a guy who has liked knees or shoulders, it's really weird and it's really not fair for the girls who want to dress the way they want.

  8. Since the weather is starting to get warmer people will start wearing tank tops and shorts. The dress code is definetly more directed to girls because people get mad when it's 30 degrees outside and we are wearing shorts. I think as long as you are not showing too much, everyone should be able to wear whatever they want. It's getting hot out, summers around the corner, we can't cover up with sweatpants and hoodies. It's different when boys wear things for example, shorts. Boys shorts are made longer than girls and girls shirts are made shorter than boys. I think it's very unfair that girls are still being sexualized, judged and told to "cover up" because we are wearing clothes.

  9. I do not think St-Thomas should have get a dress code. They are unfair for girls. There are no advantages for dress code. Dress code is very annoying. You have to follow all the dumb rules. They are also focused on girls which isn't fair for them. They get in trouble if their shoulders are out or there shorts are too short .

  10. I think the dress code is kind of stupid. Dress codes have mostly been for girls, which makes no sense whatsoever. People are just really stupid these days and should really just get educated. Of course we need to wear appropriate clothing, but just because someone is showing their shoulders does not mean boys are going to crazy. Like, c'mon, it's 2021. Not only that, if we had a dress code, people would not be able to express themselves. everyone would look the same and it would get really boring. It's always good to have diversity.

  11. I don’t think that St. Thomas should adopt a stricter dress code than the one that they already have. The dress code is pretty dumb because you should be able to wear whatever you want and not have to worry about it being considered inappropriate. One thing that doesn’t make much sense about the dress code is that it states that shoulders and backs can’t be shown because they are considered “inappropriate”. Who considers shoulders inappropriate and why should someone even care if your shoulders are showing. I think that a disadvantage of a dress code is that it prevents you from wearing something that you really enjoy wearing and can possibly prevent you from expressing yourself through your clothing. I do think that dress codes are more geared towards girls because some girls will get dress coded for wearing a not even revealing shirt. Aswell most of the dress states that girls can't wear certain things but it never states that guys can’t wear a certain article of clothing.

    1. exactly, if you really enjoy wearing something and you're comfortable with wearing it to school, then we should be able to express ourselves. great blog :)

    2. I agree it almost never states anything about the guys clothing in the dress code policies. I enjoyed reading this.

  12. I find that the reason why dress codes are a thing is because it's a way to restrict people from certain limits to free-dress. Some schools have uniforms so that their dress codes are under control, but I find certain dress codes too restricting to a point where it's absolutely stupid to have this rule in dress code policy. Personally, I think that dress codes needs to minimize into basic BASIC rules like don't show up in underwear or wearing swimsuits or pjs in school isn't allowed- things like that, instead of: showing your bra is wrong, showing your shoulder and collarbone isn't allowed, that's just plain ridiculous. Dress codes are definitely targeted towards girls, 2/3 of it to target dress codes specifically for girls and it's stupid.

  13. I think that if every school had a uniform we wouldn’t have this problem. Also you wouldn’t have to find clothes in the morning.I think that the advantages to a dress code are that everyone wear the same things and so no one will be bullied or judged for what they wear. A disadvantage is some people get mad at that because they can’t express themselves. I don’t mean this to disrespect anyone but everybody wears the same clothes anyways so what's the point of having a dress code or not. Everyone will still be wearing the same things but it will be school friendly.

  14. at st. thomas we already have a dress-code, and pretty much more directed/targeted to girls. it's so dumb on how they think they can dress-code people because of what they wear on their own body, like it's not their own clothes that they bought, it's yours and no one can make you do anything different based on what you buy and wear because it's how you express yourself. there are many disadvantages of having dress-codes is that if you have clothes that you bought that you really want to wear and are comfortable with doing so, even if it will go against the dress-code, they won't allow that, which is pretty stupid. and a disadvantage is that i guess the obvious things like coming to school in something like a bikini or like just your underwear as well because that's pretty inappropriate too.

  15. Well St. Thomas already has a dress code and I definitely don't prefer it. The advantages of having a dress code is like I don't have to be scared of what some people might wear. The disadvantages are that I don't get to dress how I like or prefer myself as, if I was comfortable in ripped jeans and an over-sized t-shirt, I don't get how I'm not allowed to wear it...because my knees are attractive? That isn't a good enough reason. The dress code is for sure geared more towards girls. no crop tops, towards girls ( not trying to be stereotype ). Most of the rules are so that boys don't get distracted, so is education still surrounded around males. I get don't come naked to school but honestly some rules are really stupid.

    1. That is a really good point, there are so many standards for women and a lot of them are because of men.

  16. Yes St-Thomas has a dress code, I assume the reason they added the dress code was so there was no distractions. Example : wearing pijamas could make you wanna fall asleep in class, and they use that mentality to add more dress codes that would limit these distractions. But yes the dress code is a lot more directed towards girls than just wearing pijamas in class. And I think if we are all honest who is attracted to knees and shoulders like especially that it just unfair. And honestly if that's what they want to wear well they should be allowed because at that point its just ridiculous.

  17. Dress code is a lot more directed towards girls. It's pretty sad that when a girl wears something that isn't in dress code the only thing people focus on is her body. Girls are constantly sexualized and shamed for what they wear and what they look like by society. Some may say that dress code is to protect girls but we need to teach boys to learn to control themselves. You should be able to wear what you feel comfortable and good in but obviously still with the rule that you have to wear enough clothing. I don't think St Thomas should adopt their own dress code policy like a uniform because this way we are free to express ourselves through our clothing and feel comfortable.

  18. We already have a dress code, and I definitly don't think it should get stricter. It's basically common knowledge that the dress code is to try and not distract boys and that is super unfair, like come on its 2021 and guys still get distracted by shoulders and knees. I think schools should get rid of dress codes apart from like the really obvious things that shouldn't be worn, like wearing pyjamas because it makes kids feel comfy and sleepy, or like not wearing really dark and sad things or racist, sexist, or homophobic things on your shirt.

  19. I find that the dress code that St. Thomas already has is very annoying and dumb and that we don't need an even stricter dress code. Some people like wearing for example ripped jeans or a top with spaghetti straps, but the school says that it's "too distracting" to other students. I just find it stupid because most people know that people aren't usually attracted to knees and shoulders. I think that the dress code is directed a lot more towards girls and girls can barely wear anything they want to without getting dress coded.

  20. St.Thomas should definitely not adopt a dress code policy, I had one at my elementary school where you had to wear a blue navy colored shirt and cacky pants, it was hell. There were also a couple of rules to follow it was all just terrible. Let people wear what they want, students do have judgement on what they should wear. A disadvantage for a dress code is that if you have a dress code against most of your clothes then you have to buy new clothes so that's just making your parents pay and you. An advantage I guess could be that it makes the school appealing for parents. I definitely think it's more strict on girls' dress codes, and also this meme that shows is basically the answer to this question.

  21. We already have a dress code policy, I don’t see a need in making it more strict. There are more disadvantages than advantages like people can’t express themselves and it also targets girls because a shoulder or kneecap is apparently distracting to other students. It’s not students, they mean specifically boys. As a girl, we aren’t responsible for their thoughts nor their self-control, therefore, why is the school displaying it as if it’s our fault and why are we getting punished for it. Parents should be teaching their sons not to sexualize girls and schools should be doing the same.

  22. St.Thomas already has a dress code, so it would just be getting stricter, and that's not what I want. We should be able to wear what we want. I do understand that school is a work environment and still professional, but some of this is ridiculous. I 100% think that dress code targets girls. Saying we have to cover up, because people will get distracted. Teach them to control themselves.

  23. I don't think St. Thomas should be adopting a dress code/uniform for multiple reasons. The first reason is that we pretty much already have a dress code and there's no use in making it any more strict than it actually is. The second reason is that putting all this effort and resources into a dress code is useless, because it could instead be going into something like a more robust mental health program. Overall the cons of a dress code outweigh the pros drastically

  24. I think that Saint Thomas definitely should change their dress code and it is definitely geared towards girls. Some advantages of the dress code are that you won't get “slut shamed” for what you wear which shouldn't be something in the first place. It disgusts me think that it's a thing. There are many disadvantages to the dress code such as you cannot express yourself to a certain extent, it is not fair and for most people half their close are “not appropriate”.

  25. I think that Saint Thomas already has a strict enough dress code. It is also for sure more aimed towards girls. We should be able to wear what we want. Clothes are a way for some people to express themselves and the things they're interested in. I do believe that certain things are inappropriate to wear in a work environment, like school, but are shoulders and knees really a big deal.
